There is no single daily food price

Food spending depends on your hotel, neighbourhood, restaurant choices, party size and whether breakfast is included. Count the meals you will actually buy. Meals are not included in Rihla’s coordination fee. The examples below are published menu prices, not a Tehran-wide average or a quote from us.

Published menu examples in Tehran

When checked on 1 November 2026, Koohpaye’s menu in Darband listed soup of the day at 305,000 tomans, boneless chicken kebab at 1,175,000 tomans, and buttered rice separately at 435,000 tomans. These are dish prices at one restaurant, not typical prices for every meal in Iran. Confirm the current total, inclusions and extra charges before ordering. Source: Koohpaye — menu. We do not claim a partnership with this restaurant.

How to calculate a weekly budget

Multiply people × days × daily allowance per person, then add delivery, shared purchases and any extra days. Arithmetic example only, not a market price: an allowance of one million tomans per person per day gives 14 million tomans for two people over seven days, before extras. Replace that assumption with current menus near your hotel; your actual budget may be higher or lower.

One meal: add the items before comparing

Using the published examples above, boneless chicken kebab plus buttered rice totals 1,610,000 tomans before drinks or any additional charges. This adds two items from one restaurant menu; it is not a package or market average. Confirm portion size and whether rice is separate before ordering. A zero beside a drink in an online menu does not establish that it is free; ask the restaurant for its price.

Items that are easy to miss

List breakfast if it is not included, lunch, dinner, water, drinks, snacks and delivery. Check whether rice, bread and drinks are part of a dish or separate. Include your travel companion’s meals. If food is already included in a hospital or hotel bill, avoid counting it twice.

Comparing prices and currencies

Ask for the price unit in writing: tomans or rials, and whether the displayed number is abbreviated in thousands. Do not compare figures until they use the same unit. Convert your budget using the actual exchange rate and fees available when paying, rather than a fixed currency rate stored in an article. For a dated, unit-labelled rate, use the exchange guide. The food example above remains in tomans and is not automatically repriced each week.

Meals during a medical visit

After a procedure, meal choices must follow your clinical team’s instructions rather than a general travel menu. Ask about dietary needs and meal timing before travelling, and confirm whether the hotel can accommodate them. This guide does not prescribe a medical diet.

Keeping spending manageable

Compare the total cost of hotels with and without breakfast. Request recent menus near your accommodation and budget for delivery rather than assuming you can go out for every meal. Keep food separate from surgery, accommodation and coordination fees, and allow for extra days rather than assuming a fixed departure.

Before finalising your budget

Include your expected stay, number of travellers and accommodation area in your Tehran visit enquiry. Read coordination fees and exclusions and traveller support. Relevant costs are checked again during planning; figures in this guide do not secure a later booking price.
